Abstract

This paper analyzes the different meanings held in the past and today around old age. From the Trialistic theory of Law, the impact that they have on the process of recognition, access, and exercise of rights of older persons is addressed. It is also proposed to support a complex and flexible view of this stage of life, recognizing its dynamic and three-dimensional character (material, historical and cultural). Finally, the definitions of the current human rights standards on old age are highlighted in each section. The Inter-American Convention on the Protection of the Human Rights of Older Persons, the first treaty in this field worldwide, is considered, particularly.
