Since the end of the 20th century, but especially so far into the 21th, there has been an intense legal debate about whether there is a right to access pornography, and whether pornographic materials are «harmful» enough to justify their legal regulation. In its current predominant form, porn reinforces inequality and the subjection of women, since it promotes and legitimizes sexist approaches to sex. But it’s simple and straightforward prohibition would introduce us into a spiral of censorship and cancellation that a democratic society could hardly bear. Those who wish to fight against these evil effects should not rely on the magic of prohibition, but instead focus on shaping the limits, already tried in the field of political criticism or satire. Any other way would create the illusion of a false consensus, which is generated in the silence of censorship, which, as John Milton has already warned, has never led to the truth.
