Despite the fact that national and EU labour policies have traditionally focused on wage labour, they are increasingly forced to take into account the space and influence of self-employment. This stems from a unitary understanding of the labour market, where the economic and legal position of the self-employed impacts on wage workers and vice versa. Hence, when looking at the phenomenon of professional transitions we should take into consideration the whole of the active population. Similarly, from the legal perspective we should contemplate the regulation of professional relations in their entirety. All this leads to the advocating of the opportunity to set a minimum threshold of protection rights for the self-employed, in order to balance the overall labour market
