Abstract

In this work I have analysed the importance of the notion of trust in the inside of the conceptions political-philosophical that are the liberalism and the republicanism. For this reason I have analysed two central points to which the notion of trust is linked to: the idea about freedom and democracy. With regard to liberalism, the conclusion is that it sustain a conception according to the citizens adopt an impersonal trust in the authorities. And these makes necessary the establishment of external to controls. Later I have examined the republican thought about the relation between trust and governants. In this sense it has been my purpose, following mainly the thought of Pettit, to show the tension in the republican tradition between trust and distrust. Or in other words, that there is a problematic relation between personal trust in governants (who are supposed to be virtuos) and, on the other hand the need to establish a external control in their performance. My conclusion has been that these internal tension takes the republicanism to an idea about trust in the authorities which is not essentially diff erent of the one sustained by liberalism.
