Abstract

Social rights are seriously threatened by economic globalization, which tends to commodify them. Th e economic logic of globalization is incompatible with the political and axiological logic of the welfare state. In the midst of this struggle, the economic agents at work in globalization are able to assert themselves over welfare states, which ultimately rely on them for fi nancing. Th e serious global economic crisis, with its origins in fi nancial deregulation, has led to a sovereign debt crisis requiring of States a policy of adjustments and reforms that could well compromise economic growth and employment for a long time, and also adversely aff ect social rights policies. Given this, the only valid response is the joint response of Europe in defence of a European social model, which is its hallmark in the face of the U.S. and Asian powers.
