Abstract

Th is article aims to analyse the shaping of the political role of the King in the Cádiz Constitution. Th e article begins by framing the 1812 Constitution in the context of revolutionary constitutionalism, which has little historical relevance but whose principles have ended up having an important infl uence. We then explore the powers granted to the monarch by the fi rst constitution in Spanish history; powers that, had the constitution been maintained, sooner or later would have eff ectively led to the parliamentarisation of the Spanish monarchy
